Black Science has done something that few local bands have done: make a
record that is both original and outsider at the same time. A New
Mastery Of Light is eleven tracks of outsider psychedelic, aggressive
rock with some variable structure from the norm. The Dune samples at the
beginning bring a smile to my face, but the record really starts to hook
me at sixth track, called “Two Way Ticket To Infinity” at this point A
New Mastery Of Light turns way outsider and gets really, really good.
John, the vocal/guitar/synth dude in the band is an old friend from his
Nemesis Theory days. I dig what he is getting into with the Black
Science stuff now, especially the last five tracks on this CD. The synth
stuff adds a layer missing to most of the bands around today. Its almost
jam bandy at points, which is not a bad thing, it’s kind of like a harsh
early Pink Floyd for Tool fans or something. In similar fashion I think
some the lyrics are over my head, but that’s just fine with me. I dig
the tracks and would be stoked to see the live show with nice wall of
sound to back it.
